Discover more about Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

Kylemore Abbey, originally known as Kylemore Castle, was built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy politician, as a token of love for his wife Margaret. The castle was designed by James Franklin Fuller and boasted 33 bedrooms, a ballroom, and various other luxurious rooms. The couple had fallen in love with the Kylemore valley during their honeymoon and decided to make it their home. Tragedy struck when Margaret died of a fever in 1874 during a trip to Egypt. Heartbroken, Mitchell built a beautiful neo-Gothic church in her memory, a miniature replica of Norwich Cathedral, which stands near the abbey. Both Mitchell and Margaret are buried in a mausoleum located a short distance from the church. In 1920, Benedictine nuns fleeing Ypres, Belgium, during World War I, arrived at Kylemore and established a monastery. They converted the castle into Kylemore Abbey, the first Irish Benedictine Abbey, and opened an international boarding school for girls, which operated until 2010. Today, the nuns continue their Benedictine ministry through various educational programs and spiritual retreats. Visitors to Kylemore Abbey can explore the restored rooms of the abbey, wander through the Victorian Walled Garden, visit the neo-Gothic church and mausoleum, and enjoy the scenic woodland trails. The Visitor Centre offers insights into the history of the abbey and its inhabitants. The abbey also has a restaurant and a craft shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and local products. The stunning lakeside setting, surrounded by the Twelve Bens mountains, makes Kylemore Abbey a truly unforgettable destination.
