Discover more about Mozartstatue

Mozartplatz, formerly known as Michaelsplatz, is a historically significant square in Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town). It serves as a tribute to the city's most renowned composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The square is located close to Residenzplatz and the Salzburg Cathedral. The focal point of Mozartplatz is the Mozart Monument, created by Ludwig Schwanthaler. The statue's unveiling was delayed due to the discovery of a Roman mosaic on the site. It was finally revealed on September 4, 1842, in the presence of Mozart's sons. Bavarian King Ludwig I sponsored the statue and donated the marble pedestal. A copy of the Roman mosaic can still be seen at the statue's base. The buildings surrounding Mozartplatz contribute to its historical significance. The Imhofstöckl building houses the tourist information office. The Neue Residenz, on the south side, has been home to the Salzburg Museum since 2007. Mozart's widow, Constanze Mozart-Nissen, lived in the house at Mozartplatz 8. The Salzburg Christmas Museum and Café Glockenspiel are located on the west side. Today, Mozartplatz is a vibrant hub where visitors can admire the Mozart statue and the surrounding baroque architecture. Street performers and horse-drawn carriages add to the atmosphere.
