Discover more about Cataratas do Iguaçu - Brasil

Located on the Iguaçu River, the falls' name originates from the Tupi-Guarani language, meaning "big water". Legend tells of a god who, enraged by a mortal's elopement with his intended bride, sliced the river, creating the falls and condemning the lovers to eternal separation. The falls were formed over millions of years by the erosion of the Iguaçu River across the Paraná Plateau. The area was first inhabited by the hunter-gatherers of the Eldoradense culture around 10,000 years ago. The Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to discover the falls in 1541. The Brazilian side of Iguaçu offers a unique perspective, showcasing the immense breadth of the falls. The main attraction is the Trilha das Cataratas (waterfalls trail), a well-maintained path that leads to various viewpoints, offering stunning panoramic vistas. The trail culminates at the Salto Union, where a platform extends over the river, providing an up-close and personal experience with the cascading water. An elevator provides access to the top of the falls, offering even more spectacular views. Iguaçu National Park was established in 1939 to protect this unique ecosystem. It is home to diverse flora and fauna, including coatis, monkeys, toucans and a variety of birds. Visitors can explore the surrounding rainforest through various trails and boat tours, offering an immersive experience in this natural paradise.
