Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo) is the undisputed star of Iguazu Falls, a mesmerizing cascade shared by Argentina and Brazil. This awe-inspiring waterfall isn't just one of many; it's a collection of powerful falls that plunge 82 meters (269 feet) into a narrow abyss. The sheer volume of water—averaging 1,800 cubic meters per second, enough to fill 36 Olympic swimming pools in a minute—creates a deafening roar and a perpetual mist that can be seen from miles away. Located on the border between the Argentine Iguazú National Park and the Brazilian Iguaçu National Park, Devil's Throat is accessible from both sides, offering distinct perspectives. From the Argentinian side, a network of steel walkways, reached by the Ecological Train of the Jungle, leads visitors directly over the river to the edge of the falls, providing an unparalleled, up-close experience. Here, you can witness the raw power of nature as the water rushes beneath your feet before plummeting into the chasm. The falls have a rich history, with the steel walkway replacing a wooden one that was destroyed in 1992 due to significant floods. The name 'Devil's Throat' adds to the mystique, hinting at the overwhelming force and captivating danger of the falls. Eleanor Roosevelt, upon seeing Iguazu, famously exclaimed, 'Poor Niagara,' a testament to Iguazu's superior grandeur.
