Discover more about Château de Chaumont

The Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, perched high above the Loire River, offers a captivating blend of history, art, and stunning gardens. Founded in the 10th century, the original fortress was built to protect Blois from rival counts. King Louis XI ordered its destruction after a rebellion, but it was rebuilt in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Catherine de Medici acquired the château in 1550 and famously used it to banish Diane de Poitiers, her husband's mistress, in exchange for the Château de Chenonceau. Diane only resided there briefly, but she left her mark by completing unfinished sections and adorning the castle with her emblems. Over the centuries, the château passed through many hands, each adding to its unique character. Today, the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire is celebrated for its International Garden Festival, held annually from April to October. This festival brings together landscape designers from around the world to create themed gardens, transforming the grounds into a vibrant display of horticultural innovation and creativity. Beyond the gardens, the estate features contemporary art installations, historic interiors, and the beautifully restored stables. Visitors can explore the chapel, admire the architecture, and wander through the English-style park, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
