Embark on a memorable journey aboard the Train of Pelion, a narrow-gauge railway that connects Ano Lechonia with Milies, traversing the verdant slopes of Mount Pelion. This historic train, affectionately known as "Moutzouris" , which translates to 'the Smudgy' , due to the smoke and steam it once emitted, offers a unique and scenic experience. Construction of the railway began in 1892, with the first section to Ano Lechonia completed in 1896. The line was extended to Milies by 1903. The project was overseen by Evaristo De Chirico, father of the renowned painter Giorgio de Chirico. The younger De Chirico, who was born in Volos, found inspiration in the railway's construction, which later influenced his artistic creations. The 15-kilometer route from Ano Lechonia to Milies takes approximately 90 minutes, including a 15-minute stop at Ano Gatzea. As the train ascends, passengers are treated to panoramic views of the Pagasitikos Gulf and the lush Pelion landscape. The route showcases remarkable architectural landmarks, including arched bridges and tunnels crafted from carved stone and grey limestone. A highlight is the five-arched stone bridge of Kalorema. Approaching Milies, the train crosses the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico's Bridge, where the tracks curve while the bridge remains straight. Pelion is steeped in mythology, once believed to be the summer home of the twelve Olympian gods and the land of the Centaurs. Legend has it that the wedding of Pileas and Thetis, Achilles' parents, took place near the Milies station. Another mythical site along the route is the cave of Centaur Chiron, mentor to Achilles. Today, the Train of Pelion operates on weekends from spring to autumn, with daily service during the summer. The train departs from Ano Lechonia at 10:00 am and from Milies at 3:00 pm. A single journey ticket costs €10, and a return ticket is €18. For children (ages 4-12), a single journey is €6, and a return is €10.
