Pira Delal: The Beautiful Bridge of Zakho

Pira Delal, alternatively known as Delal Bridge or Zakho Bridge, is a historic stone bridge that graces the town of Zakho in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Spanning the Khabur River, this ancient structure stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess. Believed to have been first erected during the Roman Empire, the bridge's present form is thought to originate from the Abbasid era (750-1517). The bridge stretches approximately 115 meters in length and reaches a height of 16 meters. Constructed using large limestone blocks sourced from the Khabur River, its design incorporates a series of arches, showcasing the engineering skills of the time. The name 'Pira Delal' translates to 'beautiful bridge' in Kurdish, reflecting the high regard in which it is held by locals and tourists alike. The city of Zakho is even called 'Zakhoka Delal' in honor of Delal, a heroine from local mythology. Legends surrounding the bridge's construction tell tales of skilled craftsmen and sacrificial offerings, adding to its mystique. One such legend claims that the builder's hands were amputated to prevent him from creating another bridge of comparable magnificence. Despite the presence of newer bridges in Zakho, Pira Delal continues to attract visitors. It serves as a crossing point for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Some adventurous individuals even dive from its highest point into the river below.
