Discover more about Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale

Housed in a former royal palace, the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale provides an immersive experience into Pisa's regal past. Constructed in the late 16th century by Bernardo Buontalenti for Francesco I de' Medici, the palace replaced the old Medici residence and served as a home for the grand dukes of Tuscany. Over the centuries, it was inhabited by the Medici, Lorraine, and Savoy dynasties. The museum, established in 1989, showcases an array of exhibits, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and decorative arts. Visitors can admire portraits of the Medici and Lorraine families, works by renowned artists, and a unique collection of ancient armaments from the Gioco del Ponte. The museum also features fine tapestries and valuable furniture that belonged to the royal families. Of particular note is the collection of ancient armaments from the Gioco del Ponte, comprising over 900 pieces of Lombard craftsmanship from the 15th to 18th centuries. Other highlights include works attributed to Rosso Fiorentino and a young Raffaello, as well as precious ivory miniatures from the Ceci collection. The museum also displays paintings by Galileo Chini and portraitist Italo Griselli.
