Discover more about Castello Tramontano

Castello Tramontano, an imposing, yet unfinished castle, dominates the Matera skyline from its perch on Lapillo Hill. Construction began in 1501 by Count Gian Carlo Tramontano, a feudal lord whose heavy taxation and oppressive rule led to his assassination in 1514. The castle, designed in the Aragonese style, features a central keep and two lateral towers, offering a glimpse into what was intended to be a formidable fortress. The castle's history is intertwined with the struggles of the Matera people against feudal oppression. King Ferdinand II had promised the city freedom from feudal lords, but Count Tramontano obtained the County of Matera, leading to widespread resentment due to his heavy taxation to fund the castle. This ultimately led to his demise and the abandonment of the castle project. Today, Castello Tramontano and the surrounding park offer visitors a place to stroll and enjoy panoramic views of the ancient Sassi di Matera. Although the castle itself is not always open to the public, the grounds provide a tranquil escape and a chance to reflect on the tumultuous history of Matera. Restoration efforts have been ongoing since 2008, focusing on preserving the castle's structure and the surrounding moat.
