Discover more about Chiesa Rupestre di Madonna delle Tre Porte

Nestled in the Murgia Timone area of Matera, the Chiesa Rupestre di Madonna delle Tre Porte, or Rock Church of the Madonna of the Three Doors, is a captivating testament to the region's rich history and religious heritage. The church derives its name from the belief that it originally had three entrances carved directly into the rock. Over time, the collapse of the right aisle has altered its structure, leaving a unique interior space. Inside, the church is divided into two naves, where originally there were three, adorned with religious art and symbols. Numerous graffiti crosses etched into the walls by devoted pilgrims serve as ex-votos, testaments to faith and devotion. The altar is positioned along the side wall of the left nave, set against the present-day entrance. Above the altar, remnants of a fresco depicting the Annunciation, alongside a 13th-century Kyriotissa (Virgin Enthroned as Queen), can be seen. Near the apse of the left nave, visitors can admire a fresco of the Crucifixion. The main nave's apse showcases additional frescoes from the 15th century, including a Deesis and a Madonna and Child portrayed offering a pomegranate. The Chiesa Rupestre di Madonna delle Tre Porte is located on the southern slope of the Murgia Timone plateau, offering panoramic views. From this vantage point, visitors can admire the Sasso Caveoso district and the Gravina of Matera. The church is currently undergoing restoration.
