Barataria Preserve

The New Orleans swamp tour boats are fully narrated and our captains are natives of the Barataria Swamps with a background of gator hunting, fishing and trapping. They will entertain you and amaze you with the ecology of the swampland. They have lived the life! Here, birds, snakes, turtles, fur animals, and gators are the kings of the swamp and easily spotted in spring, summer, and fall. Gators do hibernate during the cold winter months, but lay on the bayou banks on warmer days. So even in Winter, our native Captains can sometimes find a sunning Gator on our tour. The slow drift of our tour boats through moss draped trees and small waterways, will provide ample opportunity for viewing and photography. Your comfort is guaranteed on our tour boats. They have a roof, restroom, cushioned seats, and windows that can be raised or lowered during cold or rainy weather, along with plenty of standing and walking room. These tours are entertaining, educational and exciting.

The transportation was completely disorganized. They said 30 min window from 10:45 and then we waited about an hour from then to pick up the remaining passengers. After that there is an 1 hr and 20 min drive. On the way back they picked up random tourists and somehow gave them priority drop off. Expect to spend at least 4 hours of nauseating driving on bumpy roads on this trip.

I went in May 2024 - the bus driver who picked me up at my hotel was very rude, but Gary (the driver to the plantation) made up for it with his humor. The Oak Alley Plantation Tour wasn’t anything special (though the grounds were beautiful), but the swamp tour was amazing! Captain Ernie was fun and educational while making sure everyone stayed safe. I lost count of the number of alligators that I saw, most of them coming right up to the boat! I would definitely recommend the regular, open sided boat as the air boats were very loud and you can’t move or walk around for better views. Please note that the bus rides to the plantation and back from the swamp are not for those prone to motion sickness. Also, don’t sit in the back row of the bus, the air conditioner would leak water on me every time we hit a big bump, which was often. The lady working the gift shop at the swamp was also very friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

The plantation tour was very nice - gave a real sense of life in the 1800’s. during the swamp tour we saw a lot of gators in their own environment it was so nice to see them! Would highly recommend this tour.

Captain Dany our tour guide from Cajun Pride did the swamp tour. He was funny, knowledgeable and safe. He showed us Alligators, Turtles, Wild Boars, Raccoons, Squirrels, Cranes, Ducks on their natural habitat. He showed us the graveyard site of Julia Brown infamous voodoo priestess. Roby our Grayline Tour guide was equally excellent, funny and knowledgeable about the history of New Orleans. We learned so many facts about New Orleans. The tour was 7.5 hours long stopping at Oak Valley Plantation & Cajun Pride swamp tours.

The tour of Oak Alley Plantation was very educational as it explained how slaves were treated on the plantation. The Swamp boat tour was great. Captain Ernie explained about life in the Bayou and took us to areas in the bayou where we could view alligators in the water. There was even one sunning itself on the bus of an old boat. He had a baby alligator on board that he allowed us to hold and explained how they grow. He was very informative.

Beautiful plantation, a little bit of a drive but worth it. Too bad I couldn't take any pictures but I do understand the concerns. Our guide was very informative
