Peekaboo Gulch

The slot canyon is most famous because of the last 100 meters, before the junction with Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch - here the ravine cuts deeper into the sandstone, with a series of interlinked potholes, extravagant swirls and fins of rock, and several arches; these different openings and the many corners and crevices account for the curious name of this canyon.

Admission Included

Spooky Gulch

Only 10 inches wide at some points, Spooky is appropriately named. It is possible to travel almost halfway through before the first of two climbs, so go ahead and squeeze through as far as you dare.

The best way do hike these canyons is with an experienced tour guide. We were lucky to have Neil as our guide! We have moderate hiking experience and Neil made us feel safe and confident through even the most challenging areas. He has a great personality and shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of the area which added to our overall experience.

What a fantastic experience. Regan was our guide. The ride out to the start point was a crazy bumpy dirt road, Regan gave us some of the history and geology of the Grand Staircase on the ride out and we all got to know each other a little better as well. The walk out to the canyons were gradual downhill, and some more conversation about the geology and natural history of the area. The canyons were amazing and Regan was very upbeat and excited to lead us through our first experience doing this. In Dry Fork, along the way he showed us some techniques to use when navigating various types of terrain in the canyons. Peekaboo was our first challenge, but Regan was very encouraging. There was some low level water along the way, but Regan was very adaptable to the situation as we navigated our way up the canyon. He was very enthusiastic, and put confidence was boosted as we moved along. It was challenging, in a good way, and so much fun. Spooky was also a great experience, and Regan once again was so encouraging along the way. I cannot overstate how much fun this was. You will not regret doing this.

Absolutely loved this tour!! Reagan was our guide and was such an amazing encouraging guide. There were definitely some tight and tricky spots along the hike and he was so helpful and made sure everyone got to see all the amazing sites. Highlight of my trip honestly. Can’t recommend it enough!

I did this Outstanding “Trio” Tour with Roam Adventures in late April on a beautiful morning. The tour involved a nice ride in an air-conditioned Jeep down Hole-in-the-Rock Road to the trail head. Only two guests on this ~4-hour adventure on the scheduled day. Our tour guide Neal was amazing. His knowledge of the area and willingness to share info and answer questions made this tour so much better. Several generations of Neal’s family are from this area and his knowledge of Escalante history / culture and local Fauna & Flora adds so much value to the hike. This tour actually involves three slot canyons Dry Gulch Narrows (a nice slot you do on the way in and again on the way out), Spooky Slot Canyon, and Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. This is an unbelievable adventure through tall, tight, twisty slots. Neal was invaluable in picking the best direction and helping us over and around obstacles and short climbs / descents. Some areas are so tight the hiker must remove packs and turn sideways to navigate through. Makes for fantastic photos and an unforgettable adventure. One of my favorite areas was “The Cheese Grater” where the slot narrows down to 10 -12 inches. I scraped up my hiking pants a bit in this area but would not trade this adventure for anything. Anyone in reasonably good shape can do this tour. (Spoken from a 72 year old’s perspective :-) ) DO NOT HESITATE to book this Outstanding tour with Roam Adventures. Ask for Neal as a tour guide as he made this ½ day adventure incredible. Dan Murphy, Old Bridge, NJ

This was an amazing hike (5.5 miles) through 3 slot canyons, and Regan was the best tour guide ever! I could not have made it through Peekaboo and Spooky without his help and guidance. (I am 68 & qq.in good shape.) I have been planning my Slot Canyon trip for over a year, and Upper & Lower Antelope Canyon were amazing, but you walk slowly through with 90 other tourists. Thus was a completely different experience: there were only 4 of us (hikers) on this tour with Regan. It was well worth the price, and I tipped Regan 3 or 4 times more than I had originally intended because he was such an amazing tour leader.

A must-do experience in Escalante! Worth every bit of money spent to do this with a guide. From learning about the geography and plants to getting assistance in some tricky spots and having someone to take your photos, it’s a 10/10 experience. Regan is a top-notch guide!

My family and I had the trip of a lifetime going through these slot canyons. Regan and Tony were amazing guides as they were very patient with the diverse abilities of our group.

The absolute best tour company. ROAM really cares about its customers. Their prices are amazing considering the service they provide. I took a tour of Escalante's famous slot canyons with ROAM. I am not an ordinary hiker. I am 82 years old with a history of severe asthma, a real challenge considering slot canyons can be stressful for anyone. Quarters are tight, and gyration are required to get past obstacles. My tour guide let my body do things I thought were impossible to overcome every obstacle. He had studied the techniques and could transfer that knowledge. He guided my feet and hands to the spots that would enable me to scramble safely. He gave me confidence. He loves this fascinating land, its plants and animals. He loves his job and the people he guides. A rare young man. Get this, he found a lizard that had fallen into the slot and carried it to safety, all the way to the end of the canyon. He had stories and descriptions about plants and animals. I cannot heap enough praise on ROAM and everybody there. They helped this old man achieve a dream. They were kind, patient considerate and informative.
