Arlington National Cemetery

Established on May 13th, 1864, Arlington National Cemetery receives more than 4 million visitors annually. It was originally built on lands confiscated during the Civil War as the number of dead began to exceed the space available in local cemeteries. Since then, soldiers from every major war involving the US are buried here.

Military Women's Memorial

After meeting your guide at the welcome center and receiving an introduction to Arlington National Cemetery, one of the fist memorials you’ll visit is commemorating women who served in the United States Armed Forces. The memorial is in the Hemicycle, a ceremonial gateway to Arlington National Cemetery constructed in 1932. The design for the memorial features 10 triangular 39-foot-high illuminated glass pyramids on top of the Hemicycle, designed to represent the barriers women had to overcome to join the military and throughout their military careers. Your guide will relay the stories of some of the remarkable women who are remembered here.

Arlington House - The Robert E. Lee Memorial

Occupied by Robert E. Lee before the outbreak of the war, the historic quarters of Arlington house contain a multitude of secrets waiting to be unlocked. When the Civil War began, Lee was asked by Lincoln to take command of the Union Army. But Lee, torn between loyalty to his country and his home state of Virginia, ultimately fled when war broke out. His house was taken over as a base by Union troops who used the grounds as a cemetery to prevent him from returning. As your guide takes you through these storied halls, you’ll learn about the life of the decorated and accomplished general.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

One of the consequences of modern warfare, is the large number of unidentified dead. Since 1921, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has provided a place of mourning and remembrance of all unknows who lost their lives fighting in wars America has been involved in. Guarded 24-hours a day by soldiers from the 3rd infantry regiment, the neoclassical, white marble sarcophagus stands on top of a hill overlooking Washington D.C. A total of four soldier’s remains are laid to rest here, with the purpose of the legislation ‘to bring home the body of an unknown American warrior who in himself represents no creed, or race in the late war and who typifies, moreover, the soul of America and the supreme sacrifice of her heroic dead”.
