East Village

Travel back to the 1970s, to an East Village when apartments were cheap, music was great, and you had to show up in person to buy tickets! We’ll also walk to some lesser known, but equally significant, sites where artists honed their craft and first gained a following, places like Club 82, On the Rocks, and Great Gildersleeves. What a SHOW! We’ll also revisit some of the legendary shows of The Who and Pink Floyd at the Fillmore East, as well as the New York Dolls at the Mercer Arts Center. Ann is a terrific tour guide because she has experienced what she talks about. Her background and her love for the music and neighborhood brings back to life the period of the 1970's music scene. Besides telling us about the artists, she also details now the music industry works. It was a terrific afternoon.

Had the best time on this tour!! Can't wait to bring my friends along next time. What a fun experience. Ann McDermott led us on a magical tour though the East Village music scene with a lively and informative history of the "good ol days". Absolutly delightful.. I live in NYC but will never walk the East Village in the same way..

I wasn't sure what to expect when my wife asked me to go on the walking tour. I found it incredibly informative and interesting. Ann really knows her stuff!! Not only did we learn about all the major rock venues of an earlier era. Ann pointed out a lot of additional sites of interest, such as the location where the photograph of Abraham Lincoln that was used in the 1860 election was taken. I highly recommend the tour to anyone interested in the cultural history of the East Village!!

Ann grew up exploring the East Village music scene, so was easily able to impress on me how expansive it was -- and how varied the venues were. She brought the area alive with her research and memories. She clearly knew the band members, venue owners, and delightful stories involving them. She even sang a few bars herself.

I was excited. We booked it on 11/18 for 11/20. Tour guide no-showed and no one responded to message.

I had no idea how close together all of these 1970's sites were (we visited ten of them)--and I live in this neighborhood. There was a time when the giants of Rock and Roll walked the earth (and were arraigned right here in our local police station on East Fifth Street)--the Byrds, the Dead, the Who. Learning about the Fillmore East made me wish I had been born five years earlier. Also, so much architecture to see!

Ann was an enthusiastic, knowledgable and most of all fun tour guide! Ann's deep-dive research together with her firsthand accounts of rock and roll in the East Village made the neighborhood come to life! I have lived in the neighborhood 10+ years but had no idea that every street is hallowed ground for Rock and Roll, Folk, Bluegrass and Punk. A fun and eye-opening tour for all ages!

Ann's passion for her subject combined with her research of delightfully obscure factoids creates a super engaging tour. This has been my neighborhood for multiple decades, but in many ways, Ann knows it better than I do! I'll be remembering her commentary even as I am doing my grocery shopping.

Ann did a great tour of former music locations/venues in the East Village and some in the West Village too. Her extensive knowledge/information about the music of the end of the 1960's to the end of 1990's, her experience as a visitor and as part of the incrowd and her inside stories transformed these iconic places into images and memories of one of the most iconic music scenes in NYC; folk, rock, punk. I loved it!
